The Infra-Self
There is no good word for the increasingly capable person embedded in larger systems. So the book coins one — and builds a discipline around operating it well.
The Old Words Fail
Every available category measures the wrong thing. They describe a person by what they buy, where they live, or how far they stand from other people — and miss the capability actually forming inside daily life.
Two Definitions
An accountable, human-centered local capability formation, nested inside larger living, technological, ecological, economic, civic, and institutional dependencies.
The practice of becoming more capable of defining, generating, understanding, maintaining, and transforming parts of life — so that dependence becomes more deliberate, reciprocal, legible, and wise.
SelfSuff is not the disappearance of dependence. It is the improvement of dependence — chosen rather than accidental, legible rather than hidden, reciprocal rather than extractive, revisable rather than trapped in habit, subscription, fear, or pride.
The Field Report

Civilization has not left its institutions.
Governments, schools, clinics, courts, utilities, and markets remain necessary — for scale, rights, public goods, oversight, and accountability.
Selected functions are becoming locally operable.
Education, production, care, repair, provisioning, culture, and meaning can now be directed and maintained from within daily life. Not replacement — local operational compression.
Existing categories are insufficient.
Individual, user, consumer, household, institution, independence — all the wrong size. The observed formation is an Infra-Self.
Two primary architectures appear.
The integrated Infra-Agent (one accountable human center) and the distributed Infra-Unit (several). Both are legitimate.
The mature pattern is neither isolation nor total distribution.
An increasingly integrated person, nested inside chosen, distributed, multispecies relationships and accountable institutions.
SelfSuff is the discovered discipline.
Its four practical dispositions: generate, receive, share, entrust. Not a religion, lifestyle, or survivalist doctrine.
Social value exists — but is bounded.
Local capability must never become an excuse to withdraw universal provision, public responsibility, or social insurance. The danger is not that people become too capable; it is that capability becomes unequal, sealed, or extractive.
